$324,000 grant supports Penfield Children's Center Behavior Clinic study

Milwaukee, WI - The Greater Milwaukee Foundation's Russell J. and Betty Jane Shaw Fund awarded a $324,000 grant to Penfield Children's Center to continue its efforts toward addressing disparities in mental health outcomes for Milwaukee's Latino community.

The grant supports a three-year study by the agency's Behavior Clinic that will look at the impact of addressing mental health issues early on, particularly in young children living in poverty. Since 2003, the Behavior Clinic has worked with low-income parents in Milwaukee to help them manage their child's tantrums, hyperactivity and other emotional or behavioral issues. In addition to the services the clinic provides, it also serves as a training program for graduate students in the department of counselor education and counseling psychology at Marquette University's College of Education. In 2011, the clinic served 264 children under age 5 for aggression, tantrums, hyperactivity, autistic-like behaviors and other issues.

"Penfield Children Center's Behavior Clinic represents an unparalleled collaboration among service providers addressing the mental health concerns of our most vulnerable community members - our children," said Jeannie Fenceroy, a Foundation senior program officer and administrator of the Shaw Fund.

The Foundation has supported the Behavior Clinic for the past three years, most recently through a grant that funds a part-time bilingual paraprofessional position.
