Background

The Mequon/Hiram Schmitt Fund was established in the Foundation in 1984 by the City of Mequon, with assets which had been bequeathed to the City by the late Hiram Schmitt, a long-time resident of the community.

Grantmaking priorities

Educational, health or other human service programs, including capital projects, located within Mequon or otherwise serving Mequon residents.

Evaluation criteria

  • Significance to the people of Mequon of the problem(s) addressed
  • Agency’s capacity (governing body, staff, financing) to respond to the problem(s)
  • Number of Mequon residents expected to benefit
  • Urgency of need for support from the Mequon/Hiram Schmitt Fund

Eligibility

501(c)(3) nonprofit agencies that serve the Mequon/Thiensville area

Use of funds

Grants may be used to sustain an agency's ongoing activities, or to support a particular program or capital project, located in Mequon or otherwise serving Mequon residents. Grant amounts may range from $1,000 to $4,000.

Advisory Board

An advisory board, composed of Mequon area residents, reviews and makes grant recommendations. The Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Board gives final approval on all grants.
